Using the tools of biotechnology, Cornell University researcher Dennis Gonsalves, now retired, bred a papaya resistant to the destructive ringspot virus. It was the first genetically modified commercial crop developed by a public sector scientist, and it saved Hawaii’s papaya farmers from ruin.
